Background of the Study

Flexible return policies have become a significant aspect of customer service in the retail industry, particularly in the fashion sector. These policies allow customers to return purchased items within a certain period, providing them with greater flexibility and assurance in their buying decisions. For fashion retailers, where fitting, style preferences, and color variations can be subjective, offering a hassle-free return process can significantly improve consumer satisfaction and trust (Johnson & Green, 2023). In Katsina State, fashion stores are increasingly adopting flexible return policies to enhance the shopping experience and encourage customer loyalty.

Flexible return policies help to alleviate the concerns that customers may have about the potential for making a wrong purchase, particularly in categories such as clothing and footwear where fit and personal taste are crucial. These policies are often seen as a sign of a retailer’s confidence in their product and a commitment to customer satisfaction, which can lead to increased trust and repeat business (Adams & Nwachukwu, 2024). However, while flexible return policies have been linked to improved customer satisfaction, their effect on consumer trust, particularly in the context of fashion stores in Katsina State, has not been extensively researched. This study will examine how flexible return policies influence consumer trust and their overall impact on customer retention in fashion retail businesses.

Statement of the Problem

While flexible return policies are commonly adopted by fashion stores in Katsina State, there is limited research on how these policies specifically affect consumer trust. Some customers may view flexible return policies as an indication of quality and reliability, while others may perceive them as a marketing tactic or as too good to be true. This study aims to investigate the relationship between flexible return policies and consumer trust in fashion stores, providing valuable insights for retailers looking to improve customer satisfaction and retention.
